Milk Supply Discussed,
Replying to Mr. Edgar (Nat.) in the legislative Council yesterday, the Minister for Lands (Mr. Clarke) said that it was intended to dispose of the sheep and milking cows now at the Greenvale Sanatorium, and to cease farming operations there.
Mr Edgar moved the adjournment of the house “in order to discuss the unsatisfactory reply of the minister.”
The ministry’s proposal, he said, was retrogressive and amazing.
Five years ago a previous Administration had supplied the institution with both dairy cows and sheep because the milk and meat received from Melbourne were not considered satisfactory.
An ample and pure milk supply was essential for the proper treatment of consumptives.
Mr Clarke, in reply, said that the chairman of the Board of Health (Dr. Robertson) explained that the chief reason for abandoning the keeping of cows and sheep at the sanatorium was that the scheme involved a considerable annual loss, which was increasing.
Satisfactory supplies could he obtained more cheaply in the district.
Unless the question of the health of patients was involved, the Ministry must consider economies.
However, he would refer Mr Edgar ‘s representations to the Minister for Health (Mr. Bowser).
“I do not wish to reflect on a Minister, but I do say his explanation is the lamest I have ever heard” commented Mr. Edgar.
The motion for the adjournment was negatived.
