“The days of tuberculosis are numbered,” said Mr. Gartside, Minister for Health, yesterday.
“Medical science,” he said, “was attacking the scourge in earnest, and if we stick to the fight we will win through.”
Mr. Gartside was opening a new ward and recreation hall at the Greenvale Sanatorium.
The new ward will accommodate 142 beds, and enable the sanatorium to take 238 patients, instead of 96.
Mr. Gartside said that al- though 2,000 beds were available for tubercular patients in Victoria, 350 patients were still awaiting admittance to sanatoria.
he free chest X-ray scheme in Victoria had been very successful, he said.
Since 1948, 150,205 people had been examined, and 2,946 cases of T.B. discovered.
