The Governor (Sir Henry Winneke) yesterday officially opened a new $1.3 million wing at the Greenvale Geriatric Centre in Providence Road, Greenvale.
The new wing-called Sir William Upjohn House has 92 beds and facilities for physiotherapy, occupational and speech therapy.
Sir William, a leading Melbourne surgeon, has been chairman of the centre’s board of management since 1958.
The centre was formerly a tuberculosis sanitorium, but was changed to a geriatric centre in 1956.
It will now cater for 350 patients.
The centre’s manager (Mr. Vincent Cahir) said yesterday the new wing was financed by the State and Federal Governments.
It would open within two weeks, he said.
The Minister for Health (Mr. Scanlan), speaking at the opening ceremony, praised the standard of geriatric care at the centre and at its day hospitals in Glenroy and Ascot Vale.
