GREENVALE SANATORIUM.
Alleged Peculations.
COMPLAINTS BY A PATIENT.
In the course of the debate on the Estimates in the Legislative Assembly yesterday, Mr. Hogan said that some time ago he had received a letter from ill friend, who had had to undergo treatment in the Greenvale Sanatorium, and it seemed to indicate that petty peculations went on at the expense of food which should have gone to the patients.
He had made independent inquiries into the matter, and as far as he had been able to carry them they bore out the patient’s complaints.
Extracts from the letter were as follows:
“It appears that there are several officers, connected with the Board of Health whose interests are best served by permitting; the institution to be run as it is.
They come out from time to time, and go back loaded with eggs, poultry, butter, … I have been here nearly three weeks, and have had three eggs, but get good porridge in the morning and good milk. Then at dinner he get half a mus of milk (?), usually half water, while milk is sold to a local dairyman from the institution every day.
Crates of fowls continually go to the market, and bags of vegetables, peas, and beans sown and tended by the patients go the same way.
…It is common talk here that jams, pickles, sauces &c, which are from time to time given to the institution never get to the patients. As a matter of fact, we all supply ourselves in jam, cake, or scones or other little things one feels the need of when afflicted this complaint.”
The Minister for Health (Mr. Downward) stated last evening that he intended to get into communication with the chief health officer (Dr. Robertson) at once, and have an inquiry made into the allegations.
On being spoken to last night Dr. Robertson said that he should prefer to consult with the Minister before making any comments on the matter.
