Reservoirs ran dry yesterday as Melbourne tried to sate a record thirst.
The most dangerous shortage has been reported at the Greenvale Sanatorium, where officials fear 190 patients will have to be sent home unless the water position improves by tomorrow.
Others badly affected are the Spring Vale and Community Hospital, Moorabbin Hospital, and the St. Joseph’s Foundling Home.
Moorabbin nurses yesterday had to take jugs across to neighbours to be filled for patients.
Mr. J. C. Jessop, Board of Works chairman, said Melbourne had not known a worse drought.
He had imposed a 72-hour ban on sprinklers.
Mr. Jessop appealed to people in low-lying areas not to “hog” the water.
Water trucks were sent out to supply thousands of luck less householders – some of them trying to pacify childdren crying for a drink.
