Before the convalescent patients at Greenvale Sanatorium departed to spend a brief Christmas vacation among their friends they were entertained at a de lightful concert and “high tea”.
A number of bright and vocal and instrumental items were rendered by musical talent within the institution, and were enjoyed by the audience, even the “cot cases” being allowed to be present.
A “high tea” was set out by Miss Murray, matron, and her staff of assistants in the patients’ dining-room, and the tables bore a dainty array of cakes, sandwiches, jellies, fresh and preserved fruits, and sweets of various kinds.
The funds were organised by Miss Bowles, of Moonee Ponds, who provided for one hundred patients and the nursing staff.
Miss Bowles talents as an organiser are well known, as is her work for the sick and suffering.
She donated a large supply of ice cream for the patients and a beautiful iced Christmas cake for the nursing staff.
Generous donations of cash were given by Most Rev. Dr. McCarthy (Bendigo), Miss Grey (Clifton Hill), Mr. F. J. Cato, J.N. Foresters, and Celtic Club.
Business firms of Essendon donated goods and sweets. The “Sun” Toy Fund despatched a huge package of gifts and toys to Miss Bowles for distribution among the patients and the children of the patients.
It was said to be the most successful party yet held at the sanatorium.
Owing to other musical engagements, the Essendon Citizens’ Band was unable to be present, but has promised a programme of music for the patients at an early date.
The medical superintendent (Dr. M. Enid Playle), Miss Murray (matron), and patients tender their grateful thanks to all those kind friends who united to give them pleasure during the festive season, and to express their appreciation of the work done by Miss Bowles, who has done much voluntary work during past years, in a quiet way, for the welfare of the victims of tubercular disease.
